Lonesome Azalea

I live in a little house in the middle of no where, surrounded by hundreds of beautiful flowers. Those flowers being, Azaleas.

I live in this little house with two wonderful people, who I call Maw-Maw and Granddaddy.

And in this house Music is constantly being played and the song that seemed to be on repeat was Hank Williams, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”

The smell of Azaleas and anything that my Maw-Maw was cooking was the first thing that hit your senses when you entered the house.

The second was Granddaddy singing along to his favorite same old song.

But one day,

The music stopped.

My Granddaddy had passed and my home became drastically different.

The once beautiful azaleas,

Withered.

The once lively house,

Dull.

My once full of life Maw-Maw,

Depressed.

With death time seems to stand still as you learn to cope with someone no longer being a major part of your life.

But also with death comes life, not only did the flowers bloom again.

But my home became home again,

Music still played and there were no tears or sadness if Granddaddy’s favorite song was one of the ones that happened to play, there was only laughter and good memories.

My Maw-Maw was back to her normal self, remembering her husband through their old routine.

My home went back to being home,

But there was always someone missing but never forgotten.

Almost Heaven

Sliding down muddy mountain sides, four-wheeler riding through the backwoods trails, and picnics in the park… these are a few of my favorite childhood memories. Every summer my family and I spent time in the mountains of West Virginia.

Four-wheeling in the mountains

The weeks leading up to the trip seemed to drag on and on. In anticipation of our upcoming trip I would begin packing a month in advance. I was overwhelmed with the excitement of getting to see family, friends, and staying at camp Logan, our home away from home in the mountains. Traveling up was always a thrill with my three older brothers to entertain me. When we would finally arrive, twelve hours later, we would rush into the house, upstairs where the bunkroom was, to choose which bunk we would sleep on that week. The first morning, we would wake up the smell of bacon, eggs, and biscuits that were made for us down stairs. After we ate, we would head out to see our family and the four-wheeling fun would begin. We would explore the old church and get spooked because of all the ghost stories that we were told.

Next we would head to the park, but not before stopping at Parkway drive-in to get a hotdog and milkshake. Once we made it to the park, we would climb mountains and feed the wild deer. The week would fly by with the many activities we had planned. I was always sad for our week to come to an end and would long for the next summer so we could do it all again.

Navarre Fishing Pier

Fishing at Navarre Pier is one of my most cherished child hood memories. My dad started taking me when I was 8 years old. I have met many good friends and caught hundreds of fish over the years. Some days are exciting, others are relaxing and you never know who you might meet or what you might catch.

The Pier’s History

I have been fishing the pier for a long time, but it has been around a lot longer than me. It was first built in 1974 and since then, been ravaged by hurricanes, including; hurricane Opal in 1995, Hurricane Ivan, in 2004 and Hurricane Dennis, in 2005. I first started fishing on the pier right after they reopened it on June 5, 2010. Found here

Navarre Pier and the local fishermen, including me and my dad. Some of the men who caught the great white shark off the pier this spring are fishing right beside me.

“The Longest Pier on the Gulf.”

Navarre Pier has also been given the title, “The Longest Pier on the Gulf.” With it’s outstanding, 1,545 foot length, it is the longest pier in the Gulf of Mexico. It has an impressive height of 30 feet to prevent waves from crashing over the top. The end of the pier, which is an octagon, has a 3,800 square foot surface to fit an incredible amount of fishermen. There are hundreds of different kinds of fish you can catch of the pier including;

  • King Mackerel
  • Spanish Mackerel
  • Tarpon
  • Sailfish
  • Cobia
  • Blackfin Tuna
  • Bonita
  • Barracuda
  • And almost all warm water shark species

The most preferred baits are

  • Cigar Minnow
  • Threadfin
  • Herring
  • Hardtail
  • Ballyhoo

People from all around America come to see Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. It is part of Florida’s incredible emerald coast and has beautiful scenery and wildlife. When you go to Navarre you can always expect to see turtles, dolphins, and all of the fish I previously described.

This song reminds me of how enjoyable and relaxing it is to escape to the pier and fish.
